Davis Campbell, who retired as Executive Director of the California School Boards Association in 2001 after serving for fourteen years, is very active in all levels of education and a specialist in school board governance. Prior to his position as Executive Director, he served as Executive Director of the California Institute for School Improvement (5 years) and as California Deputy State Superintendent of Public Instruction (6 years).


Cambpell maintains an active consulting practice in effective governance at both the state and international level. Campbell’s international governance work includes workshops for the American School of Madrid (12 years), The American School of Paris, The International School, Tunis, Tunisia, International School, Cairo Egypt and effective governance workshops in Lisbon Portugal and Rome Italy. He has also worked with school districts in British Colombia Canada and given keynote addresses at the British Colombia School Trustees Association.


Campbell has served on a number of state level boards in education in California, including EdSource (President, 2007-2010), the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning (founding Chairperson), the California Institute for School Improvement, and the California Cities, Counties, Schools Partnership (founding board member). He also served as a Trustee on the Stuart Foundation Board of Trustees, a foundation serving the states of California and Washington.


In his home community of Davis California, he served as an elected Trustee of the Yolo County Board of Education and served for eight years on the University of California Davis Foundation Board of Trustees, and is currently chair of the Board of Advisors for the University of California Davis School of Education, Davis Campbell received the outstanding Alumni award from Sonoma State University and the 2019 Distinguished Achievement Award from the University of California, Davis Alumni Association.
